RETIRED GP Neil Reynolds is taking part in the Great North Run to contribute to a special PS20,000 mission to help a young Nepalese woman walk more normally again.

Dr Reynolds, 60, of Rudby Bank, Hutton Rudby, has just retired after 33 years as a GP at Yarm Medical Centre.

Before he retired, the patient participation group at the practice adopted a charitable cause originated by Dr Carol Donne, one of the partners, who took a trekking holiday to Nepal, where she met a local girl called Dawa, a daughter of one of her guides/horsemen.

Dawa came to Teesside in 2007 for a special consultation with a local expert when she was 14 and is now aged 20.

As a result of a hip infection in childhood, she was left with one leg more than four inches shorter than the other.

Dr Reynolds said: "This is not treatable in Nepal and so she was brought back to the UK by Carol a couple of years ago and seen by Mr Richard Montgomery, an orthopaedic surgeon at Middlesbrough's James Cook University Hospital for assessment.

"He and his anaesthetist have agreed to do the surgery for free, but the NHS has to charge about PS20,000 for use of the hospital facilities, drugs and treatment.

"She will come back to the UK for the operation once the funds have been raised.

"Dawa is currently studying and hoping to go on to a degree in business studies.

"This is the practice's challenge and we are currently arranging a wide range of activities in Yarm including pub quizzes, garden fetes and plant sales."

Dr Donne said: "Dawa is a very nice girl from a nice family and they are all very grateful for the interest shown in her.

"It's great to be able to help."

Dr Reynolds has even recorded a CD single he's selling to raise money to benefit Dawa's cause, called Learn the Uke in a Day."

He said: "Dawa is now back with her family.

"Her operation will take several hours and she will be in James Cook for seven to 10 days.

"Her cause is an excellent one and I'm training hard for the Great North Run, which is to be held from Newcastle to South Shields on September 15.
