Need stressed to raise women's political participation.

KARACHI -- Sindh Commission on Status of Women (SCSW), Government of Sindh was established as an autonomous body under Sindh Provincial Commission on the Status of Women Act (2015). It is the mandate of SCSW to act for advocacy, lobbying, coalition building, networking and as a catalyst for promotion of cause of women to facilitate their participation in all spheres of life including legal, economic, social and political empowerment. The Sindh Commission on the Status of Women conducted a non-partisan and impartial dialogue on the topic 'political participation of women and electoral violence' with female candidatesfrom all political parties contesting the general elections 2018, in order to highlight women's political participation rights issues. The objective of this meeting was to urge political parties to make women's rights a priority issue in their mandates.

The meeting brought out the challenges faced by female candidates contesting elections in Sindh and create a dialogue around the way they can be facilitated. The Commission will utilize the recommendations that result from this dialogue as Public Service Messages in print and electronic media. The overall objective of this meeting is to increase women's political participation as voters and candidates in the province of Sindh, and to encourage them to make women's rights a priority issue in their political manifestos. Chairperson Nuzhat Shirin in her speech said that the role of the commission isto work as a monitoring and facilitating body and that was why this program was organized to increase the political participation of women in Sindh and ensure the candidates that their problems will now be addressed. Secreteray WDD Baqaullah Unar said that the government had taken many initiatives but they were painfully behind every set goal needed for the political participation of women.
