Neath still waiting to record first league win; NEATH ................................10 CARDIFF ............................40.

NEATH'S quest for a first Principality Premiership win of the season continues after this comprehensive Arms Park defeat which could have been far worse had Cardiff been more clinical.

Cardiff spent the early minutes of the game camped in the visitors' half but a succession of handling and set-piece errors prevented them creating any scoring opportunities.

Finally, in the 14th minute they managed to put together a series of phases free from mistakes that allowed second-row Ben Thomas to crash over for the opening try of the game, outside-half James Thomas converting. The game continued to be played in the Neath half and in their desperation to defend, they conceded a succession of penalties. Approaching the halfhour mark Cardiff failed to capitalise on a scrum five metres out but Neath infringed once again and hooker Aled Morris was sent to the sin-bin. Cardiff opted for a scrum and when that went down referee Gareth John had no hesitation in awarding a penalty try.

Four minutes later Cardiff capitalised further on their man advantage, wing Richard Smith crossing under the posts. The 37th minute saw Neath make their first visit into the home side's 22 and when they were awarded a penalty in front of the posts they took the safe option, outside-half Luke Price making the half-time score 24-2. Neath made a lively start to the second half, getting as far as the Cardiff 5m line on two occasions but they were unable to make the territory count. Cardiff's try bonus point came just after the quarter hour mark in the half, scrum-half Tom Slater opening up the Neath defence with a great solo effort.

With a quarter of an hour of the game remaining Cardiff skipper Jonathon Edwards crossed in the corner for his side's fifth try, James Thomas maintaining his 100 per cent kicking record. Neath can take some consolation from their try in the dying moments as they broke from their own line for centre Iwan Evans to touch down CARDIFF: Tries - B Thomas, penalty try, R Smith, T Slater; J Edwards; cons - J Thomas (4) NEATH: Try - I Evans; con - L Price; pen - L Price
