Near Cortez, small-town festivities and a foliage-vivid tour.

"Oh, I'll see it next year," you might grouse, sinking deeper into the couch for some early-season football. True, southwestern Colorado's foliage display--usually at its best from mid-September through the second week in October--will indeed stage a rerun next year. But a spectacular driving tour and a cluster of celebratory events, collectively called Colorfest, might induce you to catch the seasonal show this fall. Even at high elevations where the aspens, oaks, and cottonwoods seem to burn brightest, fall tempertures are milder here than elsewhere in Colorado.

For a free Colorfest packet, write to the Cortez Chamber of Commerce, Box 968, Cortez 81321; or call (303) 565-3414. You'll receive a map and details on the 250-mile San Juan Skyway Drive, which takes you north on State 145 to Telluride, over the Dallas Divide, then south on U.S. 550 through Ouray and Silverton and Durango, then west back to Cortez.

It's easy to find pleasant lodgings and places to eat in these picturesque mountain towns; the packet provides suggestions. It also describes special Colorfest events throughout the region. Among these are Cortez's own musical Fiesta (September 30 through October 5) and Mesa Verde National Park's Anasazi Symposium (October 3, 4, and 5).
