Navy deal.

THE region has been awarded a pounds 60m contract as part of the prestigious project to build new aircraft carriers for the Royal Navy.

A further pounds 3m of taxpayers' money is also being invested in production equipment, which will help with future orders.

The news comes after the region lost out on a pounds 250m contract when it was controversially moved to Scotland.

Jarrow MP Stephen Hepburn welcomed today's news, saying: "It's a significant sign of confidence in the shipyard and in the North East when there is a major dip in the economy."
