National day for chippers a cod-send.

MORE than 200,000 people are expected to visit their local Irish Italian fish and chip shop to mark National Fish and Chips Day.

A survey by the Irish Traditional Italian Chipper Association predicted a huge turnout today at outlets across the country.

It also found 79% of people opt to enjoy fish and chips at home and 60% would never eat the meal without salt, vinegar and ketchup.

ITICA chairman Peter Borza said: "This highlights our commitment to the traditional values and ethos of the Irish Italian chipper."

The chipper culture was started by members of the Irish Italian community who arrived in Ireland in the 1880s.
