On 9 October the NZIIA joined the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority and the New Zealand Business Energy Council to co-host a seminar and roundtable on 'The German-New Zealand Energy Trilemma Dialogues: Balancing Energy Security, Affordability and Environmental Sustainability'. The German delegates were Dr Joachim Pfeiffer (member of the Bundestag), Prof Dr Friedbert Pfluger (director, European Centre for Energy and Resource Security, King's College, London), Dr Joachim Lang (director-general, Federation of German Industry) and Dr Frank Umbach (research director, EUCERS). The seminar was sponsored by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.

On 21 October Dr Sidney Jones, founder and director of the Institute for Policy Analysis of Conflict in Jakarta and one of the world's leading authorities on extremist groups in South-east Asia addressed a meeting jointly convened by the NZIIA, the Centre for Strategic Studies and MFAT on 'The Challenge of Extremism in South East Asia'.

The NZIIA was saddened to learn of the death of life member Stuart McMillan on 24 October.
