Minimum wage earners in Metro Manila may have to wait until next year for additional pay after the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) said it will not push for a new wage hike until November. In an interview, TUCP executive vice president Gerard Seno said they will comply with the National Wages and Productivity Commission's (NWPC) one-year ban in filing a new wage petition in the National Capital Region (NCR). "We will not yet file for a new wage petition since there is still a one-year prohibition from the last passage of the last wage order. We don't want to become an alarmist," Seno said, when asked if they will file for a new wage petition on Labor Day. Last April, TUCP filed for a P85 wage increase in NCR ahead of the one-year ban, which was supposed to end on June. (Samuel P. Medenilla)

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said yesterday that the oil spill believed to have come from the sunken M/V Sportivo reached Jordan town in Guimaras. Commodore Athelo YbaAaAaAeA~ez, commander of the PCG Weste Visayas district, said that the oil leak reached the shoreline of Hoskyn, Jordan. "We have seen rocks and debris contaminated with bunker oil. There are spots on it," he said. He pointed out that oil leak possibly came from one of the fuel valves and pipelines of the cargo vessel, contrary to the claim of the ship's captain that these were closed before they abandoned it. "The entire barangay (Hoskyn) is not affected (by the oil spill). There are only certain portions that these spots are observed," he said. The oil spill, he said, is reportedly evident in Rizal wharf, also in Guimaras. "The traces of bunker oil are only minimal," YbaAaAaAeA~ez said. (Raymund F. Antoni

Kabataan partylist Rep. Terry Ridon has sought the inclusion of cyber-ethics and good Internet practices as part of the basic education curriculum in the country, saying this could help reduce incidents of cyber bullying and prevent children from being victims of cybercrimes. Ridon filed House Resolution 634 to propose the idea which would integrate topics on the use of social media and other internet knowhow as part of elementary school subjects. "Educating users on cyber-ethics is a long-term and preferred solution against cyber-bullying than passing laws that can potentially infringe the freedom of expression and speech," Ridon said. HR 634 is now pending before the House Committee on Information and Communications Technology. (Ben R. Rosario)
