National Hispanic Leaders Create Historic Coalition in Support of Gery Chico For the U.S. Senate.

CHICAGO -- In an historic meeting and press conference, renowned national, regional and local Hispanic leaders met to pledge their unqualified support for the candidacy of Gery J. Chico, who is seeking the 2004 Democratic nomination in Illinois for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Republican Peter Fitzgerald.

In making their endorsement, the contingent of top Hispanic leaders considered Chico's unparalleled record of achievement in both the public and private sector. Chico served as Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley's Chief of Staff, General Counsel to the Chicago Development Council, and as President of the Chicago Board of Education, where he and Paul Vallas gained local and national prominence by turning a school system called 'the worst in the country' into a national model for school reform. In the private sector, Mr. Chico is currently Chairman of Altheimer & Gray, a leading Chicago law firm.

Henry Cisneros, who joined the coalition via conference call, pledged his support stating, "Gery Chico is already a highly respected national leader who has demonstrated his ability to balance the intricacies of social and economic priorities. We need leaders in the U.S. Senate with Gery's track record of results and his high level of integrity and character to lead us in these turbulent times. I know of no other player on the national stage who could as quickly and aptly assume a leadership role on behalf of all Hispanic Americans."

"Hispanics have not had a voice or a vote in the United States Senate for more than 25 years. Voters of all political parties across the nation must take note and make a change. The United States Senate must reflect the face of America. One of those individuals most capable and qualified to do so, is Gery Chico," stated George Herrera, President of the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, as he announced the coalition's historic endorsement.

"I am deeply moved and honored by this historic show of support," said Chico, following the unprecedented coalition meeting. "The extraordinary commitment of these leaders is inspiring. I am grateful to be a part of this significant movement to place a Hispanic in the United States Senate. This endorsement is a major first step in the long journey to the Democratic nomination."

Ana Maria Fernandez Haar, Vice Chair of the New America Alliance and Board Member of the Cuban American National Foundation stated, "Gery Chico's candidacy gives Hispanics across our nation the opportunity to elect a highly qualified, deeply committed public servant to the United States Senate. The country will be well-served by Gery's passion for service and proven ability to develop innovative, cost effective solutions across a broad spectrum of issues and constituents."

The diverse group of prominent Hispanics comprising this coalition includes: Henry Cisneros, Chairman & CEO, American Vista; George Herrera, President, U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; George Munoz, former Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Treasury Department under President Clinton and President, Munoz Investment Banking Group; Mickey Ibarra, former Director of Government Affairs for President Clinton and President, Mickey Ibarra & Associates; Raul Yzaguirre, President, National Council of La Raza; Cruz Bustamante, Lt.
