Narrow web division launched at Sun Chemical UK.

The narrow web inks market is set to become even more competitive in the UK now that Sun Chemical has belatedly set up a division dedicated to this sector.

"We have been a bit of a sleeping giant in narrow web," admits Tom Kelly, business and marketing director. Introduced at Labelexpo Europe, Sun Chemical Narrow Web currently comprises eight specialized product lines under the Onyx brand name. Using three UK locations, it will supply inks to printers operating presses up to 20.5" wide. Sun estimates that there are 450 UK printers in this growing sector, which presumably includes forms and direct mail printers, with annual sales equivalent to $37 million. The company currently claims 14 percent of this market and aims to double that share, with the accent on targeting the roll-fed label and flexible packaging markets.
