Narrow escape!

A CAR smashed into a shop in one of Bahrain's busiest streets yesterday, narrowly missing several people inside.

Staff and customers at the Office Equipment Centre on Exhibition Avenue were forced to duck for cover when a driver lost control of his Toyota Echo, mounted the pavement and crashed through the showroom window.

No one was injured, but officials said the accident has resulted in damages worth BD20,000.

It happened at around 11.30am when five staff and three customers were inside the store.

One of the workers said he was dealing with a customer when he heard the sound of breaking glass.

"My immediate reaction was to duck and I put my head down. I feared the worst - maybe the building falling," he said.

"When I looked up, I saw a car inside the showroom."

Another worker said he was at the other end store when the crash happened.

"I saw a car crashing in. I rushed to the vehicle as the driver emerged from it," he told the GDN.

"He was not hurt and said he did not know how he could have done what he did.

"We are quite used to seeing traffic go by at all times since we are located at the roundabout, but we were not prepared for this.

"Thankfully, no one was injured."

A company official confirmed 12 high-performance photocopiers were damaged, many of which were beyond repair.

"We will have to re-install a few other photocopiers and see how bad the damage is," he said.

The store has remained open for business.

Interior Ministry officials confirmed that an investigation was underway, but the Indian driver has not been taken into custody.
