Nanjing Radio and TV Deploys BigBand BMR for Digital TV and to Position Network for Ongoing Enhancement.

BEIJING -- BigBand Digital TV Management Used by Leading Chinese Operator to Expand Program Lineup and Maximize Bandwidth Efficiency

BigBand Networks, Inc., a leading provider of network platforms for video, voice and data services, today announced that Nanjing Radio and Television Network Company, Ltd. has deployed the BigBand BMR(R) (Broadband Multimedia-Service Router) for digital television services. The operator, one of China's largest, is using extensive functionality of the BigBand Digital TV Management solution to deliver live programming in its network with more than 800,000 subscribers. This BMR platform deployment also prepares the network for introduction of more advanced services and functionality.

"BigBand Networks distinguished itself from alternatives with a complete and flexible solution design that accesses content from various sources, achieves total control over program lineups and bandwidth efficiency, and performs the necessary processing for reliable delivery to Nanjing subscribers," said Mr. Lin Bao-Cheng, deputy president of Nanjing Radio and Television. "The BigBand BMR provides a complete solution for our current needs and also has next-generation capabilities to evolve with our expanding initiatives such as Gigabit Ethernet networking between facilities."

The Nanjing deployment utilizes multiple BigBand Digital TV Management functions for end-to-end delivery. The modular port flexibility of the BigBand BMR is leveraged to access content from a variety of program source types, including satellite downlinks, terrestrial broadcast feeds and local storage. The operator determines which of the accessed programs to carry and what channel lineups to utilize, which is realized through statistical remultiplexing with RateShaping(R) bit rate adaptation maintaining video quality while maximizing bandwidth efficiency. The content is modulated by broadcast QAM modules on the BMR for robust delivery to any digital subscriber device including support for DVB Simulcrypt security.

This broad range of functionality is executed with high performance through the BigBand BMR's extension of IP routing techniques to high quality MPEG-2 digital video, and with reliability through multiple redundant elements. The deployment is a result of extensive solutions design and systems installation services performed by BigBand Networks.

"By taking thorough advantage of BigBand Digital TV Management capabilities through collaboration with our professional services organization, subscribers in Nanjing are provided with abundant programming at the highest video quality, content security and service reliability levels," said Richard Chau, vice president and general manager of BigBand Networks Asia Pacific. "This deployment marks Nanjing as an advanced operator in the rapidly growing Chinese digital cable TV market with capability to openly expand service offerings, and BigBand Networks is committed to providing continuing consultation and technological solutions to extend this leadership."
