NVIDIA's RIVA 128 to Drive Diamond's New Viper Accelerator.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 26, 1997--NVIDIA Corp. today announced its RIVA 128 3D multimedia accelerator chip will be incorporated into Diamond Multimedia Systems Inc.'s (NASDAQ:DIMD) Viper (Model V330) 4 MB media accelerator. The new Diamond Viper is called a "true" 128- bit media accelerator because the RIVA 128 chip on-board provides full 128-bit multimedia processing through memory.

"With the new Viper, Diamond Multimedia is providing outstanding graphics horsepower by combining fast-action 2D and arcade-quality 3D acceleration in hardware, courtesy of the RIVA 128 chip. The result is better quality images and faster PC system performance," said David Watkins, vice president and general manager for the multimedia division at Diamond Multimedia Systems. "The Diamond Viper is optimized to provide a powerful integrated mainstream graphics solution for both business and gamers alike."

The Viper's massive polygon setup and pixel processing engines off- load intensive processing from the host CPU. This lets Diamond capitalize on the "fast and wide" architecture of NVIDIA's RIVA 128 engine, allowing the PC to perform the most complicated 2D and 3D multimedia functions in tandem without slowing down overall system performance. In addition, Diamond Multimedia's Viper with the RIVA 128 chip can truly take advantage of Microsoft Corporation DirectX 5.0-based software applications and the latest video technologies such as next-generation DVD solutions. In addition to the PCI-based retail product, the new Diamond Viper will be available in both PCI and AGP configurations for OEM customers.

"NVIDIA is excited that Diamond Multimedia has chosen to feature the RIVA 128 graphics engine with its new Viper media accelerator," said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO of NVIDIA Corp. "Our advanced chip design and Diamond's award-winning subsystem design have driven technology to the next level, making Viper a 'must have' for consumers with advanced computing needs the fall."

The RIVA 128

The RIVA 128 3D multimedia accelerator is the first in a family of highly integrated graphics products that is targeted at the performance segment of the mainstream graphics market. By leveraging NVIDIA's graphics technology and the massive gate counts available with SGS-THOMSON's advanced 0.35 micron 5LM technology, RIVA 128 is able to deliver intense realism, high frame rate 3D, along with leadership 2D, VGA and video acceleration in a single chip.
