NUI CORPORATION FLORIDA OPERATIONS RETURNING TO NORMAL
 IN WAKE OF HURRICANE ANDREW
BEDMINSTER, N.J., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- NUI Corporation (NYSE: NUI) announced today that operations are approaching normal in its City Gas of Florida division. Approximately 3,000 of its customers, primarily residents of the Cutler Ridge and Saga Bay areas of Dade County, Fla., were without gas service as a result of Hurricane Andrew. Approximately 30,000 of the company's customers were in the direct path of the storm.
"We are current on all emergency calls and have been restoring gas service rapidly since Monday," said Jack Langer, president of City Gas. "We anticipate that normal operations will be restored by the middle of the this week. Unfortunately, as many as 1,000 of our customers that generate a total of approximately $220,000 in annual margins suffered severe damage to their homes, which will require reconstruction before they can receive gas service."
Hurricane Andrew impacted gas utility operations in Florida and nationwide as most gas utilities' supplies were curtailed due to the storm's presence in the Gulf of Mexico. "Drawing upon the gas purchasing expertise of NUI's consolidated gas supply operations has enabled us to restore supply levels required to meet the needs of all our customers within 36 hours of the reported curtailments," said John Kean, president & CEO of NUI.
Following Hurricane Andrew, personnel and resources were shifted from, City Gas' northern division in Brevard County, Fla. to help meet Dade County emergency response requirements. NUI's New Jersey division, Elizabethtown Gas, and its employees are also providing relief support. "We are proud of our ability to respond quickly to this emergency, using all the resources of our company to meet the demand for utility services and provide relief support to the area impacted by the Hurricane," John Kean said. "We will continue to provide support to the area as long as the residents need our assistance."
"We do not anticipate a material impact on our consolidated financial results, but the memory of Andrew and the impact on the residents of Dade County will not be easily forgotten. We are committed to working with the people of the areas affected as they try to rebuild their lives and their homes," John Kean said.
NUI Corporation, based in Bedminster, is an exempt public utility holding company engaged in the distribution of natural gas to approximately 318,000 customers through its principal operating divisions, Elizabethtown Gas Company in New Jersey and City Gas Company in Florida.
