NUI AWARDED PORT ST. LUCIE FRANCHISE
 BEDMINSTER, N.J., July 14 /PRNewswire/ -- NUI Corporation

(NYSE: NUI) today announced that its Florida Division, City Gas Company of Florida has received a 25-year franchise agreement to serve natural gas to the City of Port St. Lucie, Fla. The agreement was unanimously approved last night by the City Council of Port St. Lucie and will take effect in ten days.
"We are very excited about working with the residents and businesses of Port St. Lucie in providing them with a low cost energy source," said John Kean Jr., executive vice president of NUI Corporation. "Port St. Lucie and its surrounding areas are among the fastest growing in Florida and NUI Corporation looks forward to growing with them. We appreciate the efforts of the City Council and Mayor Lawless in providing natural gas as an alternative energy source for this community. We also wish to recognize the efforts of Councilman Riley, who, because of his desire for a lower-cost energy alternative for the citizens, was instrumental in bringing NUI to the City of Port St. Lucie."
Port St. Lucie (population of approximately 60,000), site of the New York Mets spring training facility and the new St. Lucie West development of some 18,000 planned homes, grew 280 percent over the last decade. The city is the largest in St. Lucie County, which is expected to gain some 30,000 residents by 1995.
John Kean Jr. estimates that NUI will invest initially $2 million to $3 million in bringing natural gas service to the residents of Port St. Lucie and hopes to begin service within a year. Currently, residents of Port St. Lucie have access to only propane and electricity.
"Residents should benefit from NUI's advanced gas purchasing operation, and by bringing them natural gas, we expect to significantly lower their energy costs," added Jack Langer, president of City Gas Company of Florida. "In addition, we look forward to expanding our appliance purchase and leasing programs to include the residents of Port St. Lucie, thereby providing attractive alternatives for residents to obtain appliances at lower costs."
NUI Corporation, with 960 employees, currently serves 87,000 customers in Florida in Brevard, Broward and Dade Counties through its City Gas Company of Florida division. NUI Corporation's New Jersey Division, Elizabethtown Gas Company, serves 229,000 customers in seven counties throughout the state of New Jersey. NUI Corporation invests over $30 million annually in its utility businesses and has a distribution system that extends over 4,600 miles.
