NUCLEAR INDUSTRY CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Dec. 1 ~PRNewswire~ -- On Dec. 2, 1942, in a converted squash court under the west stands of the University of Chicago's football stadium, a team of scientists achieved the first controlled nuclear fission reaction.
Fifty years later, this reaction plays an essential role in nuclear medicine, in innovative industrial technologies and in the world's energy supply.
Today, that same controlled release of energy is used in the nation's 110 nuclear-fueled electric generating units to produce more than 20 percent of this country's electricity.
Duke Power (NYSE: DUK) is recognized as one of the nation's leading electric utilities that operate nuclear-fueled power plants.
"Our own roots in the nuclear business go back to the 1950s, when we sent some of our folks to school to begin learning about this new energy source," Duke Power Chairman and CEO, Bill Lee, said. "We began our first practical experience with the technology in 1957 when we joined three other utilities to build and operate a small prototype reactor. In 1973, we put our first commercial nuclear reactor into operation -- Oconee Unit 1."
Duke Power now operates seven nuclear fueled units that this year will supply nearly two of every three kilowatt-hours of electricity used by its 1.6 million customers in North Carolina and South Carolina.
"Nuclear power has contributed substantially to the world's economic health and environmental protection," Lee said. "It's contribution to the world's energy supply has been a stunning success story."
