NU-KOTE ACQUIRES LASER CARTRIDGE REMANUFACTURER FUTURE GRAPHICS

DALLAS, Feb. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Nu-kote Holding Inc. (NASDAQ: NKOT), one of the leading suppliers of toner, ribbons and other products for printing equipment, today announced that it has acquired Future Graphics, a privately held remanufacturer of laser cartridges with annual sales of approximately $15 million.
The purchase price and terms were not disclosed.
David F. Brigante, Nu-kote president and chief operating officer, said, "Nu-kote entered the toner cartridge remanufacturing business with its own product line over a year ago and sales have been growing gradually. This acquisition makes the company a major player in this relatively young industry. By combining Future Graphics' cartridge remanufacturing capabilities with Nu-kote's toner manufacturing and distribution strengths, Nu-kote will become one of the few fully integrated cartridge recycling companies," he added.
Nu-kote acquired ICMI, a toner manufacturing company, in February 1992 and is in the process of increasing its production capacity. A portion of this additional capacity will be dedicated to the company's expanded cartridge remanufacturing business.
Remanufacturing involves collecting used toner cartridges, replacing or refurbishing most of the cartridge parts, and refilling with new toner. The company estimates its environmentally sound cartridge recycling program saved approximately 1 million pounds of plastic and metal from disposal in landfills last year.
The 1993 retail market for replacement laser printer cartridges is estimated at $1.5 billion, and the installed base of laser printers is growing at an estimated 30 percent annually. In 1992, approximately 18 percent of the total replacement market consisted of remanufactured cartridges, a percentage that is expected to grow.
Future Graphics, with over 50,000 square feet of production facilities in California and New Jersey, employs a number of innovations in its cartridge remanufacturing, a 19-step process that produces among the most reliable cartridges in the industry.
Brigante noted that recycled cartridges are a rapidly expanding market, and that legislation passed last year requiring federal government agencies to purchase recycled cartridges for their laser printers is indicative of the positive light in which the industry is perceived. "There are substantial economic and environmental benefits of recycling, and this acquisition should propel Nu-kote forward in a growing market that is a natural strategic fit for the company," he said.
