NTT launches joint research to develop new optical services.

TOKYO, July 4 Kyodo

Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp., Sharp Corp. and Dai Nippon Printing Co. said Wednesday they have started joint research to develop new fiber-optic network services.

''The joint research aims to explore what new information-sharing services should be like if they are to harness the potential of the optical network,'' the three firms said in a statement.

For about six months from July, the three will bring together their latest technologies and content, give examples of the services and verify their business models by periodically holding appropriate events, they said.

In the research, NTT Laboratories will be in charge of technologies for the optical network and for the information-sharing platform, Sharp will study high-definition displays, broadband terminals and services, and Dai Nippon will cover high-definition, high-quality content centered on still images, they said.
