NRC STAFF RELEASES ASSESSMENT OF OPERATIONS AT PLANT VOGTLE
ATLANTA, Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will meet with Georgia Power Company officials on Wednesday, Dec. 4, at the Vogtle nuclear power plant, located near Waynesboro, Ga., to discuss the agency's latest Systematic Assessment of Licensee Performance (SALP) report on operations at the facility.
The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. (EST) at the plant site. Members of the public and media representatives are welcome to attend for purposes of observation and may discuss the report with NRC officials after the meeting has concluded.
The assessment was done by NRC managers and inspectors for a period from Oct. 1, 1990 through Sept. 28, 1991. Performance at Vogtle was evaluated in seven functional areas such as plant operations, radiological controls, security and other important functions.
Overall, the NRC said in its report, performance at Vogtle has improved. The agency told the company that radiological controls continued to exhibit superior performance and that plant operations was characterized by good judgment and conservative decisions in operating the plant.
The NRC said that Vogtle's challenge is to continue the improved performance shown in certain areas while maintaining high levels of performance in others.
Here are the categories assigned for the present evaluation period and those for the previous evaluation. Category 1 is the highest rating achieveable, and Category 3 the minimum acceptable level of performance:
