NRC REGIONAL ADMINISTRATOR TO HOLD MEDIA BRIEFING
TO DISCUSS REGULATORY ACTIVITIES IN NEW ENGLAND
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Regional Administrator for the Northeastern United States will hold a special media briefing in Cambridge, Mass., on May 14, 1992, to discuss the status of regulatory activities in New England.
This briefing will begin at 10 a.m. in the Howard Johnson Hotel, 777 Memorial Drive, Cambridge, and it will be the second such briefing this year by Thomas T. Martin, the NRC Region I Regional administrator. The first was held in Philadelphia on February 7. Region I covers 11 Northeastern states and the District of Columbia, and includes 34 licensed nuclear power plants, 18 test and research reactors, several fuel facilities, and about 2,560 other users of radioactive materials.
Martin will give evaluations of the nuclear power plants in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. He also will discuss some of the NRC's experiences with medical, commercial and industrial users of radioactive materials, primarily in states other than New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Maine, which are "Agreement States," that license, inspect and regulate such licensees, after agreeing to enforce state regulations that are compatible with federal requirements.
The discussions also will include some of the radioactively contaminated industrial sites -- some dating back many decades -- and the NRC's program for
the clean-up and eventual decommissioning of these sites. Martin also will review some of the major NRC enforcement actions taken in New England in the last year.
The is a media briefing, not a general public meeting. The room for the briefing will be open at 9:30 a.m. so that electronic media will have time to set up for a prompt 10 a.m. start of the briefing.
