NRC ISSUES POSITIVE REPORT CARD ON CP&L'S ROBINSON PLANT
RALEIGH, N.C., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- A recent Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) evaluation of Carolina Power & Light's (NYSE: CPL) Robinson plant near Hartsville says that the plant's performance "was good and is improving."
The Systematic Assessment of Licensee Performance (SALP) Report says that plant operations, security and radiological controls, in particular, have exhibited "superior performance."
"We are proud of the Robinson plant's performance both this year and through its 21-year history," said Charles R. Dietz, Robinson Nuclear Project Manager. "The report reflects the excellent performance of our dedicated employees."
The NRC report evaluates the Robinson plant's performance in seven areas: plant operations; radiological controls; maintenance and surveillance; emergency preparedness; security; engineering and technical support; and safety assessment and quality verification.
In each category, the plant is assigned a rating of "1," "2" or "3." A "1" rating indicates that reduced NRC attention may be appropriate; a "2" rating that NRC attention should be maintained at normal levels; and a "3" rating that increased attention should be given by both the NRC and the company.
In the report on the Robinson plant, the NRC assigned three category "1's" for operations, security and radiological controls. The four remaining areas each were assigned "2's."
The annual NRC report on the Robinson plant covers the period March 31, 1991 through June 27, 1992. It is a formal assessment that supplements the normal regulatory reviews by the NRC. NRC reports of this type are issued routinely on all commercial nuclear power plants in the United States.
The draft NRC report will be discussed at a public meeting of the NRC and CP&L Thursday, September 24 at 8:30 a.m. The meeting will be at the Information Center at the Robinson plant.
