NPGA CALLS FOR TAX FAIRNESS FOR PROPANE GAS

WASHINGTON, April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Propane Gas Association (NPGA) praised Texas Sen. Bob Krueger for his strong stance in favor of tax fairness for alternative fuels. In a letter to Treasury Secretary Lloyd Bentsen yesterday, Sen. Krueger urged the Clinton administration to provide an exemption from the proposed Btu tax for domestically produced, clean-burning propane gas and natural gas when used as motor fuel.
In urging tax fairness and neutrality, Sen. Krueger said, "The development of alternative fuels, although extremely encouraging in recent months, could be thwarted by federal government policies which unintentionally discriminate against natural gas and propane, our most promising alternative fuels." The Clinton administration has already proposed exempting ethanol, methanol, MTBE, and ETBE motor fuels from the Btu tax.
Also this week, Treasury Secretary Bentsen recognized the benefits of propane at a Senate Finance Committee hearing. Bentsen stated that propane should be taxed at the same rate as natural gas and electricity and should not be taxed at the higher rate proposed for petroleum products.
Jim Burroughs, NPGA's vice president for government relations, endorsed the Krueger initiative stating, "Bob Krueger knows the benefits of propane gas from his years as a member of the Texas Railroad Commission. I hope that his colleagues in the Congress will take his expert advice and support fair treatment for all motor fuels."
