NOW 10,000 PRODUCTS PLACED AT FINGERTIPS OF HEARING AND SPEECH IMPAIRED
NASHVILLE, Tenn., May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Some 10,000 products have been literally placed for the ordering at the fingertips of the hearing and speech impaired by Service Merchandise (NYSE: SME), the nation's number one catalog store retailer.
Appropriately marking "Better Speech and Hearing Month," Service Merchandise has installed a Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD) utilizing a toll free number (1-800-367-2744).
Persons who are hearing and speech impaired can use their personal TDD to dial and type an inquiry, get a quick response and complete an order with Service Merchandise, which is staffing its TDD 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They can order any of the 10,000 brand name items in the 542 page Service Merchandise Jewelry and General Merchandise catalog.
"Making shopping easier for those with hearing and speech impairments is only one of the many things we've done to make the customer's shopping experience a pleasant one," said Raymond Zimmerman, chairman of the board of Service Merchandise.
Inquiries and orders are made possible when an individual calls Service Merchandise's toll free TDD phone number and types the question or order into their own TDD. The message is received by a Service Merchandise associate and is made visible on a LCD screen. To further simplify communication, a printer has been installed to capture their messages. The advantage is that an entire order can be placed with ease.
"It's a retailer's responsibility to recognize the needs of their customers. Hopefully soon, the majority rather than the minority of retailers will offer a TDD service to their customers," said Zimmerman.
Service Merchandise is "America's Leading Jeweler" and currently operates 364 stores in 36 states. The company reported sales in excess of $3.39 billion in 1991.
