NOVELL SELECTS MAYNARD TO DEVELOP SMS COMPLIANT SOFTWARE
LAKE MARY, Fla., Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Maynard Electronics(R), Inc., an Archive(R) company, today announced that Novell Inc. has selected Maynard as the first company contracted to write a component of Novell's new Storage Management Services (SMS). SMS is an open architecture developed by Novell in response to customer backup/restore and upgrade needs.
"Novell Inc. has selected Maynard Electronics, Inc., as an SMS subcontractor based on Maynard's reputation as a global leader in backup systems and commitment to technical excellence," said John Edwards, Novell's director of NPD Marketing. "The TSA written by Maynard will be used in the first SMS-based migration tool to aid non-NetWare network operating systems to convert to NetWare, Novell's network operating system," Edwards continued.
Novell chose Maynard to develop the data migration tools necessary to backup 3COM's 3+ Share data for restoration on NetWare v3.11 servers. The backup solution developed by Maynard will utilize customers' existing tape drives, provide server-based backup and restore functions, support both DOS and Macintosh files, and existing tape libraries.
Maynard Electronics, Inc. is the first third party developer to create a SMS compliant Target Service Agent (TSA). Novell will be providing a series of TSAs to work with Novell's open architecture solution for SMS. Novell's migration tools are designed to provide the end-user backup and restore functionality, as well as to offer an upgrade solution by ensuring comprehensive hardware support and compatibility between disparate operating systems. Novell's SMS solution will allow the user to migrate to a new network operating system gradually without being required to recreate data or storage systems.
"Maynard's SMS development work is based on our years of experience as a market leader in tape backup systems, our pioneering work in LAN backup architectures and the fact that Maynard systems already offer extensive cross-platform support," said Robert Wight, vice president of Maynard's Software Development Group. "Our Novell-certified MaynStream Version 3.1 software illustrates the technical expertise that we will bring to this effort to benefit Novell and Maynard customers alike."
MaynStream(R) Version 3.1 software is designed specifically for use in network environments and offers enhanced support for viewing servers and volumes in NetWare environments, Fast File Restore and the ability to perform peer-to-peer backup of remote workstations on NetBIOS as well as IPX-compatible networks. In addition, MaynStream Version 3.1 software offers dynamic login/logout of NetWare servers for completely secured unattended operations and full support of Novell NetWare/386 so that the MaynStream backup system will accommodate growing network demands.
Novell, Inc. develops NetWare systems software products that manage and control the sharing of data across a variety of network computing environments, including computer workgroups, departmental networks and business-wide information systems.
Based in Lake Mary, Fla., Maynard is a global leader in backup systems with annual sales in excess of $100 million and approximately 400 employees. Maynard offers a complete selection of cassette, cartridge, 4mm DAT, and 8mm tape drives for the IBM-compatible PC, PS/2, RISC System/6000 and AS/400, DEC, NeXT, Sun Microsystems, and Apple Macintosh computers.
