 NOTED PHYSICIAN ELECTED TO MEDTRONIC BOARD
 MINNEAPOLIS, March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE: MDT),


announced today that Antonio M. Gotto, Jr., M.D., Distinguished Service Professor and chairman of the Department of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and The Methodist Hospital in Houston, has been elected to Medtronic's board of directors.
 Gotto, 56, holds the Bob and Vivian Smith Chair in Medicine and the J.S. Abercrombie Chair in Atherosclerosis Research at Baylor. He is director of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute's Specialized Center of Research there and heads a team of investigators that is internationally recognized for research on the role of plasma lipoprotein in heart disease. He has served as a member of the National Diabetes Advisory Board of the National Institutes of Health and of the National Heart Lung Advisory Council. He is a member of the National Institute of Medicine and president of the International Atherosclerosis Society.
 A graduate of Vanderbilt University, Gotto received his medical training at Vanderbilt and at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston. He was granted the doctorate in philosophy after four years at Oxford University, England, as a Rhodes Scholar.
 Gotto is chief of the internal medicine services at Methodist Hospital and at Ben Taub General Hospital, Houston. He is also on the staff of Veterans Administration Hospital there. Before joining Baylor in 1971, he was head of the section of Molecular Disease Branch at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Bethesda, Md.
 For more than a decade Gotto has been a volunteer leader in the American Heart Association and has served as national president. He has received the Distinguished Service Award of the International Society of Arteriosclerosis for his research on lipoproteins and has received honorary degrees from the University of Bologna, Italy, and Abilene Christian University, Abilene, Texas. He is co-author with Dr. Michael DeBakey of "The Living Heart Diet," a book on heart disease for the general public.
