NORTHWESTERN MUTUAL TO RECEIVE 'EVE' AWARD FOR AFFIRMATIVE ACTION EFFORTS

MILWAUKEE, Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Department of Labor announced today that The Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company is one of nine companies in the country named a recipient of the 1993 Exemplary Voluntary Efforts, or EVE, award. Chairman and CEO Donald J. Schuenke will accept this honor at an awards ceremony in Washington tonight.
The EVE award was initiated in 1983 and is presented by the Director of the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) to contractors that "have exhibited innovative efforts to increase the employment opportunities for minorities, women, individuals with disabilities, disabled veterans and veterans of the Vietnam-era." About 50 companies in the U.S. were nominated this year.
In a letter to Schuenke, Leonard Biermann, acting director of the OFCCP, stated that Northwestern Mutual is being honored for its successful efforts to increase the participation of minorities and women throughout the organization from executive level positions to entry level occupations. The company also is recognized for its extensive outreach and recruitment programs that resulted in significant numbers of minorities being employed.
"Northwestern Mutual is quite proud to be selected for this year's EVE award," said Schuenke. "Having diversity in our workforce is an integral part of the company's business strategy. It is an important contributing factor to Northwestern Mutual's success."
According to the OFCCP, to be considered for the EVE award, a contractor or contractor association must have obtained significant results from the implementation of a program to enhance the opportunities of minorities, women and the disabled. This effort must demonstrate commitment to equal employment opportunity; be in place at least two years and have results that are measurable; and be innovative -- go beyond "business as usual."
The nomination process included an evaluation of Northwestern Mutual's Affirmative Action initiatives in the areas of: executive and management development programs, innovative outreach and recruitment programs, labor management relations programs, employee development programs, employee support programs and drug-free workplace programs.
Northwestern Mutual is the nation's eighth largest life insurer, with assets of more than $40 billion. In 1993, for the 11th consecutive time in as many years, the company was ranked by Fortune magazine as "the most admired" among the nation's 10 largest life insurance firms. Also in 1993, for the third consecutive time, Northwestern Mutual placed in the top 15 of the 100 companies to work for.
