NORTHWEST APPLES 'TAPPED' FOR NEW SENECA FOODS PRODUCT

NORTHWEST APPLES 'TAPPED' FOR NEW SENECA FOODS PRODUCT
SEATTLE, Feb. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- "It has the color of a freshly cut apple; it smells like a fresh apple; and it tastes just like you had taken a bite of a crispy fresh apple," said Shelley E. Page, business manager for Seneca Foods Corp. Page was describing a new Seneca Foods product, Orchard Tap Apple Juice. "The look of the juice is surprising -- not golden amber and transparent, like ordinary apple juice, but light yellow and translucent -- a lot like the inside of an apple."
This tasty new juice is made from Red and Golden Delicious apples grown in Washington and Oregon, complemented by a few Granny Smith apples from Northern California. According to Page, Seneca developed proprietary technology that allows apple juice to retain fresh apples' color, aroma and flavor. Although Seneca is a Pittsford, N.Y.-based apple processor, their processing plant for the new product is located in Prosser, Wash. "It makes economic sense to be where the apples are grown," said Page. "It's also why we want to introduce Orchard Tap first to the area that produces it.
"We anticipate this product will appeal to consumers of premium orange juice and tropical juice blends," she added. "Like premium orange juice, Orchard Tap is made from fresh juice, not concentrate. It's less sweet than ordinary apple juice, and contains no additives or preservatives other than a small amount of Vitamin C to retain its light color."
Orchard Tap is being sold in half-gallon paperboard cartons, similar to milk cartons, in the fresh dairy case of many supermarkets around the area. "This type of packaging helps preserve the juices' freshness," said Page. Orchard Tap has a 90-day shelf life.
Seneca plans to offer free tasting of the new product in selected local supermarkets and at community events during the next several weeks. The Tappettes, a troupe of tap dancers wearing apple costumes, will distribute the samples and entertain at community events such as The Home Show at the Kingdome (March 1, 4 and 7) with KOMO's Katherine Wise, at the "Chilly Hilly" bicycle classic on Bainbridge Island, Sunday, March 1, and the Kid's Show at the Tacoma Dome (March 6-8) and Seattle's SODO Center (March 13-15).
