NORTHWEST AIRLINK TO BEGIN SERVICE BETWEEN LAFAYETTE AND DETROIT
MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Northwest Airlink today announced it will begin daily service between Lafayette, Ind. (Purdue Airport) and Detroit effective Sept. 9, 1992. Northwest Airlink is the regional airline partner of Northwest Airlines and is operated by Mesaba Aviation.
Four daily round-trip flights will connect Lafayette with a significant traffic center operated at Detroit by Northwest and Northwest Airlink.
Detroit is Northwest and Northwest Airlink's largest traffic center with 380 daily non-stop departures to many domestic destinations, Canada, Europe and Asia.
"Northwest Airlink will substantially improve the options passengers have to travel between the Lafayette area and the rest of the world," said Jeffrey B. Jones, director of market planning for Mesaba. "The new service will really put Lafayette back on the map in terms of accessibility for local originating passengers as well as for those coming to Purdue Airport from other parts of the country or world."
 The new flights will depart Lafayette (CST) at 6:25 a.m., 10:15 a.m., 1:45 p.m., and 5:35 p.m., and arrive at Detroit (EDT) at 8:35 a.m., 12:25 p.m., 3:55 p.m. and 7:45 p.m., respectively. Return service will leave Detroit at 9:25 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 4:40 p.m. and 8:40 p.m. and arrive in Lafayette at 9:40 a.m., 12:45 p.m., 4:55 p.m. and 8:55 p.m., respectively.
All of the flights will be provided with the airline's 19-seat Fairchild Metro III aircraft. The aircraft cruises at speeds of 300 miles per hour and offers a pressurized, comfortable service to passengers. Mesaba operates a fleet of 21 Metro III aircraft in addition to a fleet of 14 48-passenger Fokker-F27 aircraft and is rapidly taking delivery of a fleet of 25 37-seat de Havilland Dash-8 aircraft. The airline said it will respond to demand when warranted by upgrading to the larger aircraft.
Mesaba operates as Northwest Airlink under a marketing agreement with Northwest Airlines. As part of that agreement, the two airlines coordinate flight schedules, fares and marketing programs. Passengers flying on Northwest Airlink receive one-stop baggage check-in, advance seating assignments, boarding passes and earn mileage credit in WORLDPERKS, Northwest's free travel program. Lafayette will be the 43rd city on Mesaba's route system.
Mesaba Aviation, Inc., is a wholly owned subsidiary of Minnesota- based AirTran corporation. AirTran's common stock is traded on the NASDAQ National Market System under the symbol ATCC.
Northwest Airlines is the world's fifth largest airline and with its Northwest Airlink partners, serves more than 200 cities in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia and Australia.
