NORTHWEST AIRLINK TO BEGIN SERVICE BETWEEN
 BLOOMINGTON-NORMAL AND DETROIT
MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, July 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Northwest Airlink today announced it will begin daily service between Bloomington-Normal, Ill. Airport and Detroit effective Sept. 9, 1992. Northwest Airlink is the regional airline partner of Northwest Airlines and is operated by Mesaba Aviation.
Four daily round-trip flights will connect the Bloomington-Normal area with a significant traffic center operated at Detroit by Northwest and Northwest Airlink.
Detroit is Northwest and Northwest Airlink's largest traffic center with 380 daily non-stop departures to many domestic destinations, Canada, Europe and Asia.
"Northwest Airlink will substantially improve the options passengers have to travel between the Bloomington-Normal area and the rest of the world," said Jeffrey B. Jones, director of market planning for Mesaba. "We expect travelers will find our connections particularly attractive to the upper Midwest, East Coast, Canada and overseas."
 The new flights will depart Bloomington (CDT) at 6:05 a.m., 10:25 a.m., 1:25 p.m. and 5:25 p.m., and arrive at Detroit (EDT) at 8:35 a.m., 12:55 p.m., 3:55 p.m. and 7:55 p.m., respectively. Return service will leave Detroit at 9:15 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m., and 8:30 p.m., and arrive in Bloomington at 9:50 a.m., 1:05 p.m., 5:05 p.m. and 9:05 p.m.
The first departure from Bloomington to Detroit and the last flight from Detroit to Bloomington will be provided with the airline's new 37-seat de Havilland Dash 8-100 aircraft. The Dash 8 is widely used in the regional airline industry and is a favorite among passengers due to its wide body, jet-like interior. The pressurized aircraft features stand-up headroom of more than six feet four inches, a lavatory, inflight service, low interior noise levels and generous storage space for carry-on luggage.
The remaining three flights will be flown initially with the airline's 19-seat Fairchild Metro III aircraft. The aircraft cruises at speeds of 300 miles per hour and offers a pressurized, comfortable service to passengers.
Mesaba operates as Northwest Airlink under a marketing agreement with Northwest Airlines. As part of that agreement, the two airlines coordinate flight schedules, fares and marketing programs. Passengers flying on Northwest Airlink receive one-stop baggage check-in, advance seating assignments, boarding passes and earn mileage credit in WORLDPERKS, Northwest's free travel program. Bloomington-Normal will be the 44th airport on Mesaba's route system.
Mesaba Aviation, Inc., is a wholly owned subsidiary of Minnesota- based AirTran corporation. AirTran's common stock is traded on the NASDAQ National Market System under the symbol ATCC.
Northwest Airlines is the world's fifth-largest airline and with its Northwest Airlink partners, serves more than 200 cities in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia and Australia.
