NORTHWEST AIRLINK TO BEGIN OPERATING DASH 8 AIRCRAFT AT DETROIT IN MAY
MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, Minn., March 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Mesaba Aviation, which operates as Northwest Airlink, announced today that several of its Detroit flights will receive scheduled service with its new 37-seat De Havilland Dash 8 Series 100 aircraft in May.
Effective May 1, 1992, the aircraft said it would begin operating the Dash 8 on selected flights between Detroit Metropolitan Airport and Flint, Mich.; Cincinnati; Akron/Canton, Ohio; and Moline/Quad Cities, Ill./Iowa. Later in May, Erie, Penn., will receive Dash 8 service and in early June, the new aircraft will be scheduled on certain Traverse City, Mich., and Pellston, Mich. flights.
The addition of the Dash 8 aircraft to Mesaba's fleet marks the beginning of a significant expansion as the company will take delivery of 25 Dash 8 aircraft by August 1993.
The Dash 8 is widely used in the regional airline industry and is a favorite among passengers due to its wide body jet-like interior. The pressurized aircraft features stand-up headroom of more than six feet four inches, a lavatory, inflight service, low interior noise levels and generous storage space for carry-on luggage.
"These new aircraft will make air travel on Northwest Airlink more comfortable and convenient than ever," said Robert Swenson, president and chairman of AirTran Corporation (NASDAQ: ATCC), which is the parent of Mesaba. "We appreciate the support given Mesaba by the Detroit area traveling public since we began service there in December 1988, and we are confident that this reliable, passenger-friendly aircraft will be well-received.
Mesaba operates as Northwest Airlink under a marketing agreement with Northwest Airlines. The airline currently serves 39 cities in 13 states and one Canadian province. Northwest Airlink is Detroit Metropolitan Airport's second largest airline in terms of daily scheduled flight departures. The airline provides service from Detroit to destinations in Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Ontario.
