NORTHWEST AIRLINES POSTS APRIL TRAFFIC GAIN

MINNEAPOLIS, May 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Northwest Airlines said today it flew 4.64 billion revenue passenger miles (RPM) in April, up 11.1 percent from 4.18 billion RPM flown in April 1992. Capacity was down 0.1 percent. Year-over-year load factor increased 6.5 points to 65.3 percent.
Domestic traffic increased 19 percent year-over-year while available seats rose 3.2 percent. Passenger load factor in the Pacific increased 2.4 points from 60.7 percent in April 1992 to 63.1 percent last month.
The airline's cargo ton miles increased 3 percent to 172,752 from 167,686 a year earlier.
"These are encouraging results. We carried more passengers more miles in April while holding our capacity essentially flat," said John Dasburg, president and chief executive officer. "We are doing a much better job of matching capacity to demand."
Northwest and its regional airline partners, together with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, form the world's first global airline alliance and the third-largest airline system, serving more than 380 cities in 81 countries on six continents.
