NORTHWEST AIRLINES POSTS $105 MILLION PROFIT FOR THIRD QUARTER

NORTHWEST AIRLINES POSTS $105 MILLION PROFIT FOR THIRD QUARTER
ST. PAUL, Minn., Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Northwest Airlines, Inc. today reported third-quarter net earnings of $105 million, up from $91 million net income for the third quarter of 1990.
Northwest Airlines' quarterly operating revenues grew to $2.15 billion from $2 billion in the same period of 1990.
For the first nine months of 1991, Northwest Airlines posted a net profit of $76 million, down from $111 million for the first nine months of 1990. Operating revenues were $5.64 billion, up from $5.43 billion for the first three quarters of last year.
NWA Inc., Northwest's parent company, reported third-quarter net earnings of $23 million and a year-to-date net loss of $153 million. The NWA Inc. year-to-date results principally reflect the company's aircraft ownership cost in leasing, depreciation and interest and financial results from other subsidiaries.
"Our third-quarter profits reflect the hard work of Northwest's 45,000 employees in what continues to be an extremely challenging economic environment," said John Dasburg, president and chief executive officer. "While we have seen some improvement in booking trends, yields remain under pressure. It is clear that neither the country nor the airline industry has yet emerged from the recession.
"We are especially proud of our status as the nation's No. 1 on-time airline -- an achievement that all of Northwest's people are committed to. Leadership in on-time performance is a major milestone in our drive to become the airline most preferred by travelers," Dasburg said.
For the third quarter, Northwest Airlines' traffic was up 6.4 percent, while capacity grew 7.6 percent. Passenger load factor was 71.2 percent, down 0.8 points from third quarter of 1990. Yield (revenue per passenger mile) increased 0.5 percent to 12.14 cents from 12.08 cents.
Northwest is America's fourth-largest airline. Northwest and its Northwest Airlink regional airline partners serve 200 cities in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia and Australia.
