NORTHERN TELECOM WINS OVER US$100 MILLION WORTH OF SWITCHING EQUIPMENT CONTRACTS IN CHINA

HONG KONG, July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Northern Telecom (NYSE: NT) today announced the sale of US$102 million worth of its flagship DMS family of central office switching systems to the provinces of Chongqing, Hebei and Jilin in the People's Republic of China.
The contracts with the respective provincial Post and Telecommunications Administrations call for the installation of large capacity DMS-100 and DMS-100 SuperNode switching systems.
"We are extremely pleased that Chongqing, Hebei and Jilin have chosen us to support their growing telecommunications needs," said Ming Li, senior managing director, Northern Telecom (Asia) Limited. He added, "Northern Telecom has come to be known in China for providing high quality, reliable and expandable products and these sales support that."
Northern Telecom currently has over two million telecommunications lines installed or on order in China. In 1992 the company was the largest producer of digital PBXs (Private Branch Exchanges) in China through a joint venture manufacturing operation, Tong Guang Nortel, in Shekou, Shenzhen. Northern Telecom has also established a leadership position in China's data communications market, being the exclusive supplier of switches for the CHINAPAC national backbone data communications network.
Northern Telecom has committed to an aggressive schedule for the installation of the DMS switching systems in Chongqing, Hebei and Jilin. Installation is due to be completed within 18 months.
"These central office systems will allow our customers to expand telecommunications services from cities to counties and integrate the systems into a single national telecommunications network," said Ming Li.
In June, Northern Telecom signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the vice chairman of China's State Planning Commission (SPC), Ye Qing, and the president and chief executive officer of Northern Telecom, Jean C. Monty in Toronto, Canada. One of the projects covered by the MOU is the establishment of a joint venture for the development, manufacturing, engineering and service of DMS-100 SuperNode switching systems.
Northern Telecom is the leading global supplier of fully digital telecommunications switching systems, providing products and services to telephone operating companies, corporations, governments, universities and other institutions worldwide. Northern Telecom employs approximately 60,000 people worldwide and had 1992 revenues of US$8.41 billion.
