NORTHERN TELECOM SIGNS COOPERATION AGREEMENT WITH BEIJING UNIVERSITY OF POSTS AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS

BEIJING, Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) and Northern Telecom this week pledged closer cooperation through a Memorandum of Agreement on Technology Cooperation. The agreement will lead to the establishment of a technology cooperation program and an advanced telecommunications research and development center in Beijing.
The agreement was signed during a three-day Advanced Telecommunications Technology Seminar in Beijing. The seminar is jointly sponsored by China's State Planning Commission, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, the Ministry of Electronics Industry, and Northern Telecom.
Under the agreement, Northern Telecom is providing telecommunications equipment to the BUPT. The equipment, which includes a DMS-100 SuperNode telecommunications switch and a Companion CT-2 wireless telephone system, will be used to support scientists and engineers engaged in leading telecommunications research.
The DMS-100 switch is the world's most powerful digital switch and one widely being adopted in China's telecommunications market. Northern Telecom's Companion system is the world's first low-power digital wireless communications system.
The research and development center will carry out advanced R&D projects funded by Northern Telecom and BUPT. The center will advance the technology leadership of both organizations, in order to meet the needs of the Chinese market.
In addition, the agreement calls for collaborative research that will include prominent telecommunications scholars from BUPT working at the laboratories of Bell-Northern Research (BNR), Northern Telecom's world leading research laboratories based in Ottawa, Canada. Other provisions will include student exchanges, research grants and student scholarships.
BUPT also announced that the president of BNR, and senior vice president of Northern Telecom, George C. Smyth, has been appointed an honorary professor of telecommunications and will be a key member of a committee seeking ways to extend the cooperative initiative that has been established.
Today's announcement is part of a major initiative by Northern Telecom to cooperatively expand its world-class manufacturing, design, and development facilities in China. On Oct. 8, Northern Telecom announced the establishment of Nortel China, a new business unit responsible for all of the corporation's activities within Greater China, including Taiwan and Hong Kong.
BUPT is one of China's largest telecommunications research facilities, focused on telecommunications and radio engineering, applied science and technology, and computer and information engineering. BUPT is the only key university specializing in telecommunications affiliated with China's Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications.
