NORTHERN TELECOM OFFERS MAGELLAN GATEWAY ATM SWITCH DESIGNED TO SUPPORT INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAYS DEVELOPED UNDER AGREEMENT WITH GTE

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Northern Telecom today introduced a new switching system, Magellan Gateway, that will make it easier for businesses, educational institutions, cable television companies, government entities, telephone companies, and long distance carriers to deliver new data, voice, image, video and other multimedia services requiring transport over high speed, large capacity links.
The Magellan Gateway broadband multimedia switch is being produced under a development and marketing agreement between Northern Telecom and GTE Government Systems. The new product is based on the design of GTE Government Systems' highly successful SPANet(TM) ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) switch, developed for the military and federal markets, which is already being used by the U. S. military. The Magellan Gateway product expands on the original development work and enhancements done by GTE.
Northern Telecom's Multimedia Communication Systems organization, which began operations last spring, will be responsible for marketing the product in North America. Multimedia Communication Systems is focused on the emerging broadband multimedia market. The switch is in "limited availability" now and will be generally available in the first quarter 1994.
"Broadband multimedia offers businesses opportunities to improve nearly every facet of how they operate," said Jean Monty, president and CEO of Northern Telecom, Ltd. "We set up our Multimedia Communication Systems organization in March to drive Northern Telecom's focus on the impacts of broadband multimedia on customer relationships, service capabilities, business processes, alliance opportunities and new technologies."
Robert P. Halligan, vice president and general manager of GTE Government Systems, Communication Systems Division, said, "This agreement between Northern Telecom and GTE Government Systems strengthens GTE's position in the federal marketplace and provides a strong entry for our dual-use ATM technology to be utilized in commercial markets."
"Information superhighways will be built on broadband multimedia backbone networks," said Rick Faletti, president of Northern Telecom Multimedia Communication Systems. "Magellan Gateway significantly expands the power of our portfolio to deliver these networks in a manner consistent with customer values."
Magellan Gateway will allow network operators to offer users flexible pricing for different grades of service. A video customer might pay one rate, a user requiring timely throughput of mission critical data and guaranteed bit transmission would pay another, and a data user whose transmissions are not as time sensitive would pay another.
The new Magellan Gateway product joins the Magellan Passport enterprise network switch, announced last March, and a "backbone network switch" to be announced this fall, to comprise the company's broadband switching products.
GTE Government Systems is a leading supplier of sophisticated communication systems for the U.S. Department of Defense and Northern Telecom is a leading global telecommunications equipment provider.
