 ELECTED TO DOW BOARD OF DIRECTORS
 MIDLAND, Mich., Feb. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Paul G. Stern, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Northern Telecom Limited, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, was elected to the board of directors of The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW) today.
 Commenting on the selection, Paul F. Oreffice, chairman of the board, said, "Paul Stern is one of the best executives I have ever known. His general business sense and deep knowledge of international markets make him a terrific addition to the Dow board."
 Northern Telecom is a global telecommunications research and manufacturing corporation with 57,000 employees worldwide and revenues in 1991 of $8.2 billion (US). The company has extensive operations across North America, Europe, the Asia - Pacific region including Japan, the Caribbean, Mexico, and throughout Latin America.
 Dr. Stern was elected chairman of the board of directors of Northern Telecom in April 1990. He was elected to the board of directors in 1988, and served as a consultant from May 1988 until his appointment as vice chairman and chief executive officer March 1, 1989.
 Prior to joining Northern Telecom, Dr. Stern served as president of Unisys Corporation from May 1986 to December 1987. In January 1981, Dr. Stern took the position of executive vice president, Engineering and Manufacturing, with Burroughs Corporation, which acquired the Sperry Corporation to form Unisys. He was elected president and chief operating officer and director in May 1982.
 He came to Burroughs from Rockwell International where he held the position of president, Commercial Electronics Operations, and corporate vice president, Strategic Management, and was a member of the Corporate Management Committee.
 Prior to joining Rockwell, Dr. Stern held a number of senior management positions with Braun AG and IBM. He was with IBM from 1968 to 1975, serving in such assignments as manager of Integrated Circuit Processes and Products in the Components Division; director of Organization in the Data Processing Products Group; and director of New Products and Technology, and of Future Manufacturing Systems, both in the Systems and Products Division.
 From 1975 to 1979, Dr. Stern was with Braun AG in Kronberg, West Germany, where he served as chief executive officer and subsequently as chairman of the board and chief executive officer.
 Dr. Stern is a member of the Board of Directors of BCE Inc., Whirlpool Corporation, and the Wolf Trap Foundation. He was appointed to and serves on the White House National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee and is a member of The National Alliance of Business, The Hudson Institute, the Board of Trustees of the Committee for Economic Development (CED), the Board of Overseers of the Executive Council on Foreign Diplomats, and a director of The Canada - Japan Society.
 Dr. Stern's educational interests include serving on the Board of Overseers of the University of Pennsylvania's School of Engineering and Applied Science; the Board of Visitors of the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University; the Advisory Board of The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania SEI Center for Advanced Studies in Management; and the Board of Trustees of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton.
 Dr. Stern holds a bachelor of science degree in electronics engineering and a master of science and doctorate in physics.
