 NORTHERN TELECOM APPOINTS NEW PRESIDENT AND COO
 OTTAWA, Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Paul G. Stern, chairman and


chief executive officer of Northern Telecom Limited (NYSE: NT) announced today that the board of directors of the corporation confirmed the appointment of Jean C. Monty, 45, as president and chief operating officer. He was also elected to the board of directors of the corporation and a member of its executive committee.
 Mr. Monty, currently chairman and chief executive officer of Bell Canada, takes up his new position October 1. He will report to Dr. Stern who, in making the announcement following today's board meeting, said: "We are fortunate to attract to the presidency of Northern Telecom an executive of Mr. Monty's high caliber and broad experience in the telecommunications industry. He is an important addition to our senior management team."
 Dr. Stern said that in his new position, Mr. Monty will have reporting to him the presidents of the corporation's three global product groups, the president of Bell-Northern Research (BNR), the company's research and development subsidiary, and the president of components and services. These positions previously reported to Dr. Stern, who has been serving as the company's president as well as its chairman and CEO.
 In addition, Northern Telecom's five regional marketing organizations covering Canada, the United States, Europe, Asia/Pacific, and the Caribbean and Latin America (CALA), will report to Mr. Monty, through Edward E. Lucente, executive vice president.
 Along with the new COO, those continuing to report to Dr. Stern include Martin G. Mand, senior vice president, finance and chief financial officer; Clive V. Allen, senior vice president and general counsel; J. Derek Davies, senior vice president, corporate strategy, Gary R. Donahee, senior vice president, human resources; and Larry M. Speakes, vice president, communications.
 Commenting on his appointment today, Mr. Monty said: "Having a chance to be an active participant in the continuing growth and development of Northern Telecom is a once in a lifetime opportunity and it's a challenge that I look forward to taking on."
 Born in Montreal, Mr. Monty received his early education there. In 1967, he graduated from College Sainte-Marie with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1969, he received a Master of Arts (Economics) degree from the University of Western Ontario, and in 1970, a Master in Business Administration from the University of Chicago.
 In the fall of 1970, he entered the Merrill Lynch organization in corporate underwriting and worked for them until January 1974 in New York, Toronto and Montreal.
 Mr. Monty joined Bell Canada in January 1974. He has held a series of executive positions in the BCE group, including president of Telebec Ltee, vice-president (Customer Services) Quebec Region and executive vice president of BCE Inc., a management holding corporation whose core businesses are the provision of telecommunication services and the manufacture of telecommunication equipment. Mr. Monty was appointed president of Bell Canada in May 1989. He assumed his present position as chairman and CEO on July 1, 1991.
 In 1991, Bell Canada contributed CDN$914 million to BCE's consolidated net income. The company had operating revenues for the year of CDN$7.72 billion. It has approximately 54,600 employees.
 Mr. Monty is a director of Bell Canada, BCE Inc., BCE Mobile Communications Inc., Tele-Direct (Publications) Inc., Bank of Montreal, Teleglobe Inc., Telesat Canada, St. Lawrence Cement Inc. and Bell- Northern Research Ltd. He is vice chairman of the board of directors of The Conference Board of Canada and a member of the advisory committee of the Western Business School of the University of Western Ontario. Mr. Monty is also member of the World Telecommunications Advisory Council, in Geneva.
