NORTHERN TELECOM AND SCHAHIN CURY SIGN US$43 MILLION FIBER OPTIC CONTRACT WITH EMBRATEL FOR RIO DE JANIERO-BELO HORIZONTE

SAO PAULO, Brazil, Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Northern Telecom and Schahin Cury Engenharia Comercio, a major Brazilian engineering construction enterprise, have announced today, the signing of a US$43.3 million contract with Embratel, Brazil's long-distance carrier, to provide a fiber optic transmission system for Rio de Janiero-Belo Horizonte. Northern Telecom will supply a fiber optic cable and transmission system for the 470 kilometers between Rio de Janiero and Belo Horizonte.
"Schahin Cury was instrumental in providing strong support through its engineering staff and investment in this project," said Norman McDonald, managing director, Northern Telecom do Brasil. "Better quality on the telecommunications network can be achieved through improved voice, data, and image communication," said McDonald. "This fiber optic system helps Embratel achieve this goal."
This Rio-Belo system forms part of a major project which will link these two cities with Sao Paulo, and will ultimately alleviate communications congestion in southeast Brazil. This system will be part of Embratel's long-term plan to connect Florianopolis in the south with Fortaleza in the northeast by fiber cable. With the system completed, Mercosul's link (member nations of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay) with North America will be complete. Brazil will be connected by fiber optic submarine cables, according to established agreements with other nations.
