NORTHEAST OHIO FORD CAR, TRUCK SALES JUMP

CLEVELAND, Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Ford (NYSE: F) dealers in Northeast Ohio concluded 1992 with double-digit sales increases for cars and trucks -- paced by the hot-selling Ford Tempo and Taurus cars and the Ohio-made Ford Econoline and Ford Explorer trucks.
Ford dealers sold more trucks -- 21,759 -- than cars -- 20,748 -- last year for increases of 33.5 percent and 25.1 percent, respectively, over 1991. Tempo led the way with a gigantic 92.8 percent increase over '91, followed by Taurus, the best-selling car in America last year, with a 73.8 percent hike.
Dealers sold 5,000 Taurus models in '92, recording a whopping 405.4 percent increase in December alone, as the car turned in a spectacular stretch run to achieve national sales honors with a total of 409,751 sales.
Ford Probe, Motor Trend's Car of the Year for 1993, posted a 41 percent sales gain in '92 over '91, and the Ohio-made Ford Thunderbird had a 23.6 percent increase, including a 116.7 percent jump in December.
Econoline sales leaped 77.8 percent in '92, followed by Explorer with a 51.9 percent hike and the Ford Aerostar, up 47.8 percent. The Ford F-Series pickup truck, America's best-selling vehicle of any kind for the 11th straight year, recorded a 32 percent increase last year.
"The market's strength in recent months is encouraging, especially the return of individual consumers to the car market," said Ronald Tillier, Ford Division's Pittsburgh Region sales manager, covering Northeast Ohio. "Ford Motor Company was the only major manufacturer, domestic or foreign, to expand both car and truck market share. And our total vehicle market share rose by more than 1.5 percentage points, reaching its highest level since 1978."
