NORRISTOWN STATE HOSPITAL STARTS PSYCHIATRIC RESEARCH PROGRAM
NORRISTOWN, Pa., April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Norristown State Hospital today announced the start of a new long-term psychiatric research program in partnership with the Medical College of Pennsylvania.
The program, which builds upon a long-standing cooperative relationship between the two organizations, will be based on the grounds of the state hospital. It will provide long-term data on psychiatric treatment methods and medications, including clozapine, a new medication for the treatment of schizophrenia.
Information gathered through the program will be used to develop and to improve methods for treating people with mental illnesses and to reduce the side effects associated with some medications.
"This coordinated effort provides us with an opportunity to conduct scientific research in several new areas and to provide better, more comprehensive data to help us address some old treatment problems," said Norristown State Hospital Superintendent Albert R. DiDario. "Our success in previous projects conducted with the Medical College of Pennsylvania gives us reason to be optimistic about the potential for this venture."
