NORFORK SOUTHERN CORPORATION TO CONVERT COAL HOPPERS TO COAL GONDOLAS

NORFORK SOUTHERN CORPORATION TO CONVERT COAL HOPPERS TO COAL GONDOLAS
ROANOKE, Va., July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Norfolk Southern Corporation (NYSE: NSC) has begun converting 2,000 older coal hoppers to coal gondolas through March 1993 at the Roanoke Shops. The new gondolas are able to haul greater capacity, weigh less than the older hoppers, and eliminate maintenance of bottom discharge gates.
Unlike conventional hoppers, gondolas have no bottom doors for dumping. They will serve facilities, including utilities and NS's Lamberts Point coal pier, that employ rotary dumping.
NS designed these gondolas to improve the quality of the coal car fleet. The Roanoke Car Shop is producing 12 of these regular service coal gondolas per working day. The rebodied gondolas are painted gray with black stenciling to aid yard and road operations personnel to easily distinguish gondolas from hoppers.
Prior to this new gondola rebody program, more than 9,500 cars have been rebodied as conventional hoppers. NS also has purchased more than 3,000 new aluminum and steel cars since 1989.
