NORFOLK SOUTHERN VICE PRESIDENT WILLIAM E. VOLTZ DIES OF A HEART ATTACK

 NORFOLK, Va., June 24 /PRNewswire/ -- William E. Voltz, 56, vice president of Merchandise Marketing for Norfolk Southern Corporation, died suddenly today at his home in Virginia Beach.
 Voltz began his railroad career in 1962 with the Wabash Railroad and continued with the Norfolk and Western Railway when Wabash became a subsidiary of NW. He rose through various Sales positions in Chicago, St. Louis, Roanoke, Va., and Kansas City, before becoming regional sales manager in St. Louis in 1974 and assistant vice president-Sales in Detroit in 1978.
 When NW and Southern Railway consolidated to form Norfolk Southern Corporation in 1982, Voltz became regional sales manager in Detroit. In 1986, he moved to corporate headquarters in Norfolk as assistant vice president-Market Development. He was promoted to vice president- Marketing in 1987 and vice president-Merchandise Marketing in 1990.
 He attended St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Ind., as well as the University of Virginia Executive Program and the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program. He was president of the Birmingham Country Club, Birmingham, Mich., in 1985-86.
 Voltz is survived by his wife, Ellen E. Voltz; a son, Thomas Edward Voltz, and granddaughter, Erin Deidre Voltz, both of Atlanta; his mother, Sue Voltz, and two brothers, Robert and Paul Voltz, all of Chicago.
 A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 26, at King's Grant Presbyterian Church, 745 Little Neck Road, Virginia Beach. A memorial service will be conducted on Monday, June 28, at the First Methodist Church of Downers Grove, Ill. Burial will be private.
