NORFOLK SOUTHERN CORPORATION ANNOUNCES VOLUNTARY SEPARATION PROGRAM
NORFOLK, Va., Nov. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Norfolk Southern Corporation (NYSE: NSC) has announced a voluntary separation program with a one-time special compensation package for certain train service employees of its railroad subsidiaries with seniority prior to Sept. 1, 1984.
Active employees whose applications for separation are accepted would each receive a one-time $50,000 separation allowance. For those employees separating who are over age 55 by Dec. 31, 1991, the program also would provide certain medical care coverage and a $10,000 death benefit. The program becomes effective November 25 and all applications are due by December 6.
Employees who separate under this program could also be eligible to receive an additional $60,000 each as a productivity fund buyout under crew consist agreements tentatively agreed to by the union representatives of all the affected employees. Some of the agreements have been ratified, the rest await ratification.
"This program reflects Norfolk Southern's ongoing efforts to reduce the size of its work force in order to make its operations more efficient and competitive in the marketplace," said Marcellus C. Kirchner, Director, Human Resources.
