NORFOLK SOUTHERN AUTHORIZES NEW SPENDING OF $662.5 MILLION ON RAILWAY CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS

 NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Norfolk Southern Corporation (NYSE: NSC) has authorized new spending of $662.5 million on capital improvements for its railway, David R. Goode, chairman, president and chief executive officer, announced today. Spending for railway capital improvements in 1993 is expected to total about $680 million, versus an estimated $629 million in 1992. In addition to spending on newly authorized projects planned for 1993, this amount includes anticipated spending on projects authorized in previous years.
 Of the $662.5 million in new capital expenditure authority, $250 million is budgeted for the railway's rail, crosstie and ballast programs. Other major new projects include five new or expanded intermodal facilities, two new bulk distribution facilities and an auto facility for BMW in Greer, S.C.
 Spending on equipment will include $62.5 million for new locomotives and $33.4 million for new freight cars, including 626 auto racks and 100 coil steel gondolas. $93.7 million has been budgeted for freight car improvements, $55.1 million of that to rebody 3,000 coal cars.
 The railway capital budget does not include capital spending for North American Van Lines, Inc., or Triple Crown Services, Inc.
