NORFOLK SOUTHERN ANNOUNCES MODERNIZATION STUDY OF LAMBERTS POINT PLANT
NORFOLK, Va., May 21 /PRNewswire/ -- To assure continuing, reliable service to its export coal customers as worldwide demand for coal grows, Norfolk Southern Corporation (NYSE: NSC) today announced that it is studying modernization of its Lamberts Point coal facility in Norfolk.
A major component of the modernization under study would be a new loading pier to augment the existing Pier 6. The new pier would permit additional ships to be loaded with increased overall efficiency. Also under study are new loop tracks and dumpers to serve the new pier.
Environmental considerations would be an important element of the facility modernization at Lamberts Point. Any new coal-handling systems would incorporate the best available technology to control dust. These state-of-the-art controls would produce a net environmental improvement in the neighborhood surrounding the facility. The modernization study also includes a review of the feasibility of enclosing the existing Pier 6 dumpers.
"Two surge silos to be built this year will bring our capacity to 48 million tons a year, but we must be prepared to handle more than that by 1994," said Arnold B. McKinnon, chairman and chief executive officer.
"If we're to satisfy demand for our services in the future, we must act now," McKinnon said. "In undertaking this study, we're reaffirming our commitment to two vital principles. One is to meet our customers' expectations. The other is to address all environmental concerns to the satisfaction of regulatory authorities and the communities in which we operate."
