NORDSTROM TO LAUNCH NEW VISA CARD

SEATTLE, July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Nordstrom Inc. (NASDAQ: NOBE) announced today that the company has been approved by Visa U.S.A. to issue a Visa bankcard through its affiliate bank, Nordstrom National Credit Bank, located in Englewood, Colo. The new Visa card, expected to be available in Spring 1994, will allow the fashion specialty retailer to offer its customers credit with different options than are possible with its own Nordstrom store credit card, according to John Walgamott, president, Nordstrom National Credit Bank.
"Customer buying trends indicate that bankcard usage is increasing. Yet, they also tell us that our customers would prefer, if given more options, to use a 'Nordstrom' credit card," said Walgamott. "Once Nordstrom issues its own Visa card, we will be able to satisfy both of those specific customer needs."
"We are pleased that an esteemed organization such as Nordstrom has decided to exclusively issue Visa cards," said H. Robert Heller, president and chief executive officer of Visa U.S.A. "We are certain that Nordstrom will add another dimension to the competitive bankcard market."
With the approval process to issue the card complete, Nordstrom's next steps will be to finalize the specific structure, terms, benefits and marketing programs surrounding the card. "Our goal is to assure that the card is competitive with other cards on the market today and offer the extensive support structure that customers have come to associate with Nordstrom," said Walgamott.
Nordstrom is a leading specialty fashion retailer based in Seattle. The 92-year-old retailer currently operates 72 stores in 11 states and in 1992 reported sales of $3.4 billion.
Visa is the leading consumer payment card system in the world with more than 10 million acceptance locations and 309 million cards issued, including 152 million in the United States. Visa also has the leading global ATM network.
