NORDSTROM EXPANDS NATIONALLY WITH LAUNCH OF DIRECT SALES DIVISION

SEATTLE, May 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Nordstrom (NASDAQ: NOBE), a leading specialty retailer, announced today at its 1993 Annual Meeting of Shareholders a major commitment to in-home shopping with the launch of its new Direct Sales Division. The division's first product will be a series of direct mail catalogues scheduled to be in homes nationwide by spring 1994. "With these new catalogues, we will be able to soon reach customers in all 50 states," said James Nordstrom, co-chairman of the board.
The division is also charged with aggressive exploration of all additional in-home shopping options including home shopping broadcast channels, technologically based programming and, most intensely, interactive television shopping. "We see a future in interactive television in particular. It's a format that closely matches the Nordstrom style of personalized service," said Mr. Nordstrom. Interactive television allows for two-way, individualized communication between the customer and a personal shopper. "It is our intention to be a major player in this new arena. Nordstrom, with this new division, will be ready to springboard into interactive television when the right technology partners emerge."
A special task force within Nordstrom has been designated, since February 1992, to research and explore all in-home shopping opportunities, according to Mr. Nordstrom. "The findings of our task force through their study clearly indicate that the technology is ready, the customer is ready, and with this new division in place, Nordstrom is ready to move into home shopping."
Nordstrom attributes the company's readiness to several factors. The company's expansion into the East and Midwest regions has vastly enhanced its reputation and name recognition throughout the country. Additionally, the company says it believes that the availability for affordable interactive television is imminent. Finally, the company's research clearly indicates that in-home shopping is a fast-growing segment of the retail market. "People want the option of shopping from their living rooms," said Mr. Nordstrom.
He added that the company's commitment to interactive television does not preclude it from participation in broadcast mediums in the short-term. "We simply believe that interactive television could become the dominant home-shopping vehicle of the future.
"Our goal in launching this new division is simply to expand our sales base and provide the customer with more options to buy Nordstrom products," said Mr. Nordstrom. "Our stores are one great way, the catalogues will be another, and
in the near future, television home shopping. We believe in it and are ready to move forward."
Nordstrom, celebrating its 92nd year in business, operates 72 stores in 11 states and, in 1992, reported sales of $3.4 billion.
