NORAND ANNOUNCES ACQUISITION OF EUROPEAN HAND-HELD COMPUTER BUSINESS

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa, June 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Norand Corporation (NASDAQ: NRRD) and Tandy Corporation (NYSE: TAN), announced today finalization of the sale of Tandy's Micronic/Parcon organization in Europe to Norand. The Micronic line of hand-held computers had been part of TE Electronics Inc., a subsidiary of Tandy. Micronic products are marketed primarily in Germany, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Finland and France.
The sale of Norand includes the purchase of certain assets and selected sales, marketing and procurement rights to the Micronics product line, and assumption of some short-term liabilities. In addition, an undisclosed number of employees of the former organization have received offers to become Norand employees in their respective countries.
Terms of the sale were not disclosed.
The Micronic range of hand-held computers will be incorporated into Norand's own range of products. As part of the agreement, Norand has acquired full rights to all of the Micronic products manufactured within the European Community on Norand's behalf by Tandy Electronics at its manufacturing facility in Scotland.
 N. Robert Hammer, president and CEO of Norand, stated: "This is a strategic acquisition for the company, one that is a complementary addition to our current position in Europe. Our expectation is that the transaction will have a small positive impact in the near term on earnings per share. The financial impact in the longer term is expected to be greater, as a result of introducing Norand systems through the expanded distribution channel, along with enhanced sales, service and support capabilities offered by the new organization." Hammer was in Europe last week, visiting each of the Micronic offices to introduce Norand's plans for European expansion to the employees of the Micronics organization.
Robert Warn, Norand vice president of International, commented, "We have already established a substantial base in Europe. We have a strong position in the route distribution sales market, and are beginning to see similar success with our recently launched radio frequency (RF) systems products. The acquisition of Micronic significantly strengthens Norand as a Pan-European leader in the growing field of handheld computing and wireless data communications systems. Because the product ranges of the two companies are so complementary, we will be able to offer a truly comprehensive range of solutions to our customers."
In a separate proposed transaction, Tandy announced on May 26, 1993, the signing of a Letter of Intent to sell to AST Research, Inc., assets of certain other computer manufacturing operations.
Norand designs, manufactures and markets portable, computerized systems used to automate the collection, processing, and communication of information related to product sales and distribution, inventory control, and warehouse data management. Norand systems include wireless data communication networks, applications-specific software, hand-held computers, portable printers, bar code scanning devices, and related peripheral equipment. Norand maintains corporate headquarters at 550 Second Street Southeast in Cedar Rapids.
