NJ CONCERN PRESENTS CORPORATE GOOD NEIGHBOR AWARD TO PSE&G

WESTFIELD, N.J., March 19 /PRNewswire/ -- In keeping with its Save Campaign, New Jersey Concerned Citizens (NJ Concern) will present its first annual "Corporate Good Neighbor Award" to Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) at a 1 p.m. ceremony on March 23 at PSE&G's Linden Generating Station, South Wood Avenue, Linden, N.J.
Ellen Faria, NJ Concern's vice president, said PSE&G is being recognized for its support of protection of local wetlands and its unique multi-media education series "The Living Tidal Marsh." Faria said the company's corporate citizenship efforts are also being honored. She said PSE&G has constructed several wetlands walkways that are being utilized by local birdwatchers, crabbers and fishermen. In addition, PSE&G is being recognized for its sensitivity to the needs of physically challenged individuals, e.g. the company's sponsorship of closed- captioning of television news programs for the hearing impaired.
Faria will present the Corporate Good Neighbor Award -- a set of handpainted plates depicting a heron and a harrier -- to Robert Kyle, regional manager central, in PSE&G's production department.
Local community leaders, environmentalists and state officials are expected to attend the outdoor ceremony which will be held, rain or shine, near Piles Creek -- a saltwater marsh bordering the station's Arthur Kill property. The event will feature environmental displays and will spotlight PSE&G's strong commitment to environmental responsibility. "Times and priorities are changing," said Faria. "Philanthropic support of the arts no longer automatically qualifies a company for an award. It is commitment, not just monetary support, that is needed. It is a commitment to protect the environment and all of its inhabitants. We have discovered this commitment at PSE&G, where environmental policy is more than words on a piece of paper. At PSE&G it is a proven plan of action."
The award will spotlight PSE&G's Linden Generating Station for accepting the responsibility of its public trust and caretakership of the beach and streams on its land and on nearby Piles Creek. Faria said the plant's open-door policy goes beyond allowing visitors free access. Bridges and walkways have been rebuilt to allow fishermen to continue a century-old tradition of crabbing for blue crabs and fishing for striped bass in Piles Creek.
"A good neighbor is one who can live in harmony with all neighbors and in this case, PSE&G's neighbors include five species of ducks breeding on their property," noted Faria. "Other neighbors include egrets and herons on nearby Prall Island as well as the residents of the communities of Linden, Elizabeth and Rahway."
New Jersey Concern has instituted its "Corporate Good Neighbor Award" as part of its Save Campaign, a program targeted at protecting the residents and wildlife of the New York Estuary. In addition, the program seeks to recognize outstanding companies and to encourage other companies to adopt strong environmental protection plans and to conduct their business in a more neighborly manner.
