NISSAN SIGNS $12 MILLION PARTS AGREEMENT WITH U.S. COMPANY
DETROIT, Dec. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Nissan has selected Kelsey-Hayes Group's Western Wheel operation to develop aluminum wheels for vehicles to be built in Japan, in an agreement valued at $12 million. Shipments to Japan are scheduled to begin in the spring of 1993.
The agreement with the Romulus, Mich.-based automotive supplier is the first to be made by Nissan since its president, Yutaka Kume, announced plans to increase the company's parts procurement goal from North American parts suppliers.
The Kelsey-Hayes contract represents the first aluminum wheel business sourced by Nissan in which a supplier has been given design responsibility for wheel development. The aluminum wheels will be manufactured in La Mirada, Calif., and shipped to Nissan assembly plants in Japan.
"Kelsey-Hayes' Western Wheel is a good example of the ability of qualified American suppliers to provide parts to Nissan," said Junichi Hashiguchi, director, Purchasing Strategy, at Nissan. "And this contract is direct evidence of Nissan's commitment to increase automotive parts procurement on a global basis."
Nissan's Kume unveiled plans to increase North American parts purchases to $3.3 billion in 1994 during the opening of its $80 million technology center in Farmington Hills, Mich., in early November.
Nissan's program to promote activities with American suppliers extends beyond the new agreement. The company recently shared plans to hold a supplier conference for selected American suppliers in Tokyo in February 1992. In addition, Nissan purchasing representatives visited five U.S. cities last October to talk with local suppliers.
Kelsey-Hayes is a major supplier of conventional brakes, anti-lock brake systems, electrical control devices and steel and aluminum wheels for the automotive industry worldwide.
Nissan, the fourth-largest automaker in the world, manages extensive North American operations including automotive design, engineering, manufacturing, sales and marketing, research and development, consumer and corporate finance, and industrial equipment and textile manufacturing.
